How Do I Read a Floor Plan Before I Commit to a New Home?

Read a floor plan the way you will live in the house. Check the scale, place your own furniture on it, trace the routes you walk every day, count the steps and measure the doorways, find where things will be stored, and then ask what the plan does not show. A plan that works on paper for your routines is far more likely to work once it is built.
